Mr. Thomas Lord, of Elm Street, Rawtenstall, has received news that his grandson, Private Thomas Duddle Green, was killed in action on July 1st. He was well known by the tradesmen and farmers in the district as "Tommy Duddle." He joined the colours at the end of 1914, but after serving for a short period was discharged. He, however, enlisted again shortly afterwards in the King's Own Royal Lancasters in the name of "George Low." He was sent out to France in May, 1915, and saw some severe fighting, coming through several big engagements without a scratch. However, during the big "push " he, along with many other Rossendale lads, gave his life for his country.
Mrs. Greenwood, 9 Pilkington-street, Rawtenstall, has received intimation that her son, Pte. W. Greenwood, of the 1st East Lancashire Regiment, was killed in action on the night of June 10th. He was 20 years of age an enlisted at the outbreak of the war. He was formerly employed at Hall Carr Mill, and was over on furlough about seven weeks ago. He had been in the trenches in France about three weeks as a Lewis Gun operator.
Mrs. Greenwood has received the following letter from Capt, A. H. Penny. 1st E.L.R.:- “Dear Madame - I regret to say that your son, No. 5,504 Pte. Greenwood. 1st E. Lancashire Regiment, met with his death in action, on the night of 10th June. 1916. He was always a great favourite with his comrades and not only that, he was very efficient at his job as a Lewis Gunner. We are all heartily sorry and feel for you in your bereavement."
